The Evolution of Books:
From containing a table of contents to becoming a table of contents.

  1. Jessica, I really enjoy this picture because I believe that it definitely rings true with society today. Books have gone from being something of information and entertainment to becoming end-table accessories and dreaded assignments for school. With the coming-of-age technology and the knowledge and power that it contains, books are slowly dwindling out. Though I don't want to admit it, and probably won't until it actually happens, books are on their way to becoming a thing of the past and eBooks and eReaders are becoming a thing of the present and future.

  2. Jessica,

I think your image rings very close to home in the minds of many students. Books now are used to level tables out, or as a paperweight. I think this image demonstrates the importance we as English teachers, of which we need to incorporate technology into the classroom. While the internet is a valuable tool, and most students use it for fun, we must make students become critical users of the internet as the article says. Incorporating these new teaching strategies might make books a thing of the past like Shelby said, but it may spark the interest in reading that students are quickly losing.

  3. Jessica I really appreciate this picture. As technological advances occur it seems that our society keeps moving farther and farther away from literature and other forms of print. As teachers we should show the convenience as well as usefulness of books. Literature is a great place to start. Having students read books that they actually enjoy (especially for summer reading) will increase attraction toward books. From there we could show them how books can be used for research as well as various other uses. Due to the speed in which students can obtain information on the internet they often forget how much easier it is to read a book than it is to stare at a computer screen for hours. Promoting books is truly essential because their disappearing would be a real tragedy.

  4. Jessica,
Your graphic was great but what stood out to me was your caption. Together, these two images complete each other. They honestly fit perfectly. The main struggle we will be forced to battle is whether or not technology can aid our students or completely distract them from the tasks they must battle themselves. We are in for a long haul and this will be the impact our generation of teachers will have to deal with whereas previous generations struggled with incorporating technology into their pedagogical approaches to students problem areas and learning. Technology has been heavily incorporated into our learning without much conscious effort on our part. This will be our test as educators. I hope to bring my experiences in a classroom to help combat the dismissal of regular learning via books and direct instruction while students have a heavy reliance on the internet for everything.

  5. Jessica, interesting photo. Can you help me understand your choice of technology and how it relates to schooling?
